In the past, the county was primarily agricultural; however, antebellum Cabarrus experienced the booming development of the textile industry. For many years, Kannapolis was the home and corporate headquarters of Cannon Mills Company, founded in Concord was the home of Coleman Manufacturing Company, the nation's first textile factory owned and operated by African-Americans.

Coleman Manufacturing operated from to The first known textile business in the county was organized two decades before the American Civil War. Thirty-five stockholders, including several early Cabarrus County citizens, organized the Concord Steam Cotton Factory in Cabarrus County was formed in when the northeastern comer of Mecklenburg County was cut off.

After previous opposition and rejection in , the North Carolina House of Commons considered a bill to create the new county in November of Following weeks of compromise, including an amendment to name the county in honor of Stephen Cabarrus of Edenton, the popular Speaker of the House, the North Carolina Senate passed the bill in December of Cabarrus County records begin in January of The county was settled primarily by Germans and Scots-Irish who moved into the area primarily from Pennsylvania by way of the Great Wagon Road.

Some of the earliest settlers were in the region by , when the area was part of Anson County. Very few early Anson County records survive, leaving little documentation of these first Cabarrus settlers. Mecklenburg County, formed in from Anson County, was the next political and geographical unit in which Cabarrus people found themselves. Settlement continued in increasing numbers, especially after Mecklenburg records provide important clues about Cabarrus residents during this time.

Unfortunately, there are gaps in the Mecklenburg County records. Twelve years of the early minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions are missing, and many of the marriage bonds issued over the first twenty years of the county's history are not extant.

There are also missing records from Cabarrus County, partly as a result of a court house fire in Cannon Memorial Library in Concord, the county seat of Cabarrus.

It is little wonder that the first European to describe the area, a surveyor named John Lawson , was to describe the land as a "delicious country.

A high ridge ran through the middle of the land, and provided first a dry footing for an ancient Indian trading path and then for a road hewn out with axes and called the Great Wagon Road. By the third decade of the eighteenth century, pressures for cheaper land and more religious elbowroom were building in the heavily-settled areas of eastern Pennsylvania and northeastern Maryland.
